The Dialectical Map (DMap) is a free, web-based tool that supports students in visualizing, analyzing, evaluating, and constructing arguments.

DMapping
The Dialectical Map is a web-based application that students access through course assignments in their learning management system. They use the tool to construct an argument map (a DMap) and submit it for assessment and feedback. Through DMapping, students learn the essential components of argumentation and critical thinking. They develop or are given a thesis (main claim), present reasons and evidence that support or oppose the thesis, and synthesize these in a conclusion. Research has shown that argument mapping, and specifically DMapping, boosts students’ critical thinking ability.
What Students Say About DMapping

It challenged my ability to argue about a topic. Although I thought I had good argumentation skills before, it showed me what I needed to learn.

I like that it’s an organized way to present arguments, very visual and easy to follow.

I really had to think about the materials and then separate those thoughts into pros and cons, which really helped to integrate the knowledge I learned.

I really appreciate that the DMap guides me to come up with warrants and con arguments that I often ignored.
